Earlier this year (2010), I purchased an MP3 recorder, with the idea that it might prove serviceable in some way for translation work. One use that I have put it to has been to make recordings of the New Testament, read aloud, chapter by chapter, in the original Greek. Since some readers of this blog might be interested in hearing these recordings, I am making them available here for downloading. I expect to continue making these recordings, and adding them from time to time to this page, until I have recorded the whole Greek New Testament. The version I am reading from is the bilingual version (Ancient and Modern Greek) published by the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania in 1993, a reprint of the version published by the United Bible Societies in 1967; to the best of my knowledge, it gives the Majority Text of the New Testament.

I make no apologies for the many stumblings, hesitations, corrections, and mispronunciations that one will hear in these files. They are meant for my own use, and for my practice in reading the language aloud; if they prove helpful to anyone else, thanks be to God; if, to the ears of any Greek purist, they are found grating or tedious, I can only point out that I am not a native Greek speaker, that no one is being forced to listen to this or can claim not to have received their money’s worth, since it has cost them nothing, and that those who would carp at such efforts surely have better things to do with their time. The pronunciation is Modern, not Erasmian; it gives a fair approximation of the way Ancient Greek is currently spoken in the suburbs of New Jersey.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Gilbert! May our Lord bless you on this special occasion and always!

  2. Matthew Beaver Says:

It’s nice to hear your voice again! Happy Birthday!

  3. Veritas Says:

Happy Birthday, Peter! Hope it’s a good one.

  4. Peter,

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but I’ve just downloaded a few of your files, and wanted to thank you for them. I hope that they’ll help to motivate me to do something with Greek and that I’ll be back for more! Many thanks!

  5. Jennie Smith Says:

    Dear Dr. Gilbert,
WHAT A GREAT GIFT to your brothers and sisters in Christ everywhere. I will enjoy and undoubtedly be edified by these recordings you have kindly shared.
    Sincerely
    Jennie Smith Las Vegas NV

  6. bekkos Says:

    Dear Jennie,

A very belated thank you for your comment. The people at Apple are discontinuing their web hosting service (“MobileMe”) on which I have kept all the audio files collected in this post; I will need to transfer them to some other server before MobileMe goes defunct at the end of June. Your note gives me the needed stimulus to do so; it is good to know that these recorded readings of the Bible are actually being listened to by some people.

    In Christ,
    Peter Gilbert

  7. Alban Says:

    Peter:
Your down downloads on NT read in Greek are a God-send. Having completed a basic one semester course in NT Greek, I am now trying to learn more on my own. I was really struggling to find a source where I could hear it read. Thanks to you, that struggle is over! May God bless you for your generosity in taking the time to make this resource available for others.

  8. bekkos Says:

Thanks, Alban. They’re not perfect — every so often I stumble over a word — but, at the time, it was the best I could do.

  9. alif Says:

I think this is the best reading for a not native Greek speaker. Great work.

  10. bekkos Says:

    Thanks, Alif.
